We have always steered away from formatting as we believe that it distracts from the act of actually writing. That said, though, I agree that bold, and perhaps italics, are often essential when working on a piece of text.
It's not on the short-term roadmap, but we'll definitely come back to this at some point. In the meantime, you could use basic Markdown and then click the eye icon to get a preview.
